Raymond Clifford Jones Sr., age 83, passed away peacefully at his home on June 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Raymond was born on January 2, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Richard E. Jones Sr. and Jeannette Weadd Jones. He accepted Christ at an early age and made his First Communion and Holy Confirmation at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. He was educated in the Orleans Parish School District.
In 1962, Raymond answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. Throughout his life, he demonstrated strength, courage, and dedication—not only to his nation but also to his family and community.
Raymond was among the first African American bus drivers employed by NOPSI and later drove for the Greyhound Bus Company. He later worked as a special needs driver and a driver for Harmony House, where he was known for his compassion and care for those he served. A gifted athlete and competitor, Raymond was an elite pool player who traveled throughout the city competing in tournaments. In his younger years, he also coached a neighborhood baseball team, dedicating his time to mentoring and encouraging local youth.
Known for his impeccable style and cool-cat demeanor, Raymond carried himself with confidence and class. More importantly, he was fiercely devoted to his family. Growing up during challenging times, he became a protector, provider, and guiding force for those he loved. His generosity, wisdom, and unwavering support left a lasting impact on generations of his family. Raymond was a proud member of the Downtowners Social Aid and Pleasure Club for more than 20 years. As the sixth of twelve children, he treasured the close bonds he shared with his siblings and extended family.

Jones; his children, Wayne Jones, Roslyn Cheatam, Raymond (Anita) Jones Jr. of Cabot, Arkansas, and Sabrina Jones (Franklin Ebbs) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; eleven grandchildren: Christina Files, Wayne Files, Jamikka (Sherman) Wells, Terrance Cheatam, Quayshaun Martin, Ebony Martin, Justin (Dianne) Burks, Jeremy Jones, Raymond (Ciera) Phillips, Raymonil Thomas, and Raynell Howard; seven great-grandchildren; his godchildren, Bernell Hills and Donald Lewis; three brothers, Richard Jones Jr., Alvin (Carol) Jones, and Warren (Gennie) Jones; five sisters, Doris Wilson, Miriam Milton, Patricia Amedee, Marybelle Carter and Cynthia Jones; three sisters in- law Gilda Ramee and Leona (Henry) Falls, Gwendolyne (Daniel) Holmes; three brothers in-law Leroy, Larry and Louis Ramee and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
