Listen to Obituary

Magnolia Sheppard Green of Avondale, La claimed victory and eternal peace on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 8:03 am at West Jefferson Hospital. Magnolia was born in Bunkie, La to the parents of Oscar & Surfronia Washington Sheppard. Magnolia was a devoted wife (called Stanka), mother (called Ma), grandmother (called grandma and granny) and aunt (called auntie Mac). On July 11, 1962, she was united in holy matrimony with Jackson Green in Bunkie, La. From their union, four children were born. Magnolia accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age in Bunkie, La. After moving to New Orleans as an adult, she became a member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. She served under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Lawrence Gaines where she was a member of the Beautifying Committee. After Hurricane Katrina she became a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. She worshiped and served under the leaderships of Bishop Sean T. Elder and Rev. Dr. Darold A. Ingram, Jr. She was a proud member of the Deaconess Ministry. Proverbs 31: 10-12 “An excellent woman [one who is spiritual, capable, intelligent, and virtuous], who is he who can find her? Her value is more precious than jewels and her worth is far above rubies or pearls. The heart of her husband trusts in her [with secure confidence], And he will have no lack of gain. She comforts, encourages and does him only good and not evil all the days of her life.” Magnolia was a virtuous woman. She became a 2nd mom to so many and knew how to be a confidant. She knew how to hold her own in several situations. She knew how to be strong as nails and soft as cotton. She knew how to adapt. Magnolia was a praying woman. She lived by Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me…” She loved and lived for her family. When her husband became ill and unable to work, Magnolia found herself having to work and provide for her family. All while caring for him and her minor children, she had become the breadwinner. There was a time she struggled to make ends meet and became weary…but not for long. She did what she had to do and worked two jobs while maintaining her home. Can you imagine her strength and determination? She took care of her daughter Shantell during her battle with cancer. She was by Shantell’s side every step of the way. She traveled with Shantell back and forth to Houston for her cancer treatments at M. D. Anderson hospital. She exhausted her finances to make sure she and Shantell had the way and the means to get to Houston. She suffered deeply when she lost her child to cancer in 2011. Laying in bed at West Jefferson Hospital she was tired and ready. However, she mustered up the strength to give specific instructions to each of her children and grandchild Anthony. Magnolia loved talking. She found peace and joy talking with her brothers & sisters, other family members and friends near & far. Magnolia worked as a Paraprofessional for the Jefferson Parish Public School System for over 30 years. She was blessed to be able to retire from the school system prior to Hurricane Katrina in May 2005. Magnolia leaves behind to cherish her life, memories and legacy 3 children: Lorne (Teresa) Green, Stephanie (Eugene Jr.) Brooks and Jacquelyn Howard; one sister Shirley (Andrew) Davis; 3 brothers: John B. (Anastasia) Sheppard, Don Sheppard and Willie Sheppard; 6 sisters-in-law: Ella Armstrong, Lucille Armstrong, and Jacquelyn Eby, Bella Green and Diane Green; 8 grandchildren: Lorne (Erica) Clofer, Shiquita (Stephen) Mintah, Shernell Jefferson, Anthony (Nicole) Green, Rochelle Green, Kayla Brooks, Lori (Ryan) Hill and Trey Green; 18 great grandchildren; one great great-grandchild and 4 fur grandchildren: Chloe Marie Howard, Shadow, Ruthie and Esquire Brooks and Du “Poppa” Green; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
