Gaynell Hartford

Gaynell Butler, a lifelong resident of New Orleans was born on April 9, 1972 and transitioned to her heavenly home on July 29, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family. Gaynell, was a graduate of Walter L. Cohen Pubic High School. Gaynell was affectionately known as Twin, Big Baby, Gayfus, Tundra, Gay Gay, Sista Boots, and Big Donut. Butler was a dedicated member of the Fifth African Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dale Jay Sanders Sr. Butler was the Business Manager of the Keep’n It Real Social Aid & Pleasure Club, a decorated and accomplished chef, bartender and humanitarian. She leaves to mourn her precious memories; her beloved Mother, Nell Butler; Companion, Alex “Nunu” Hulbert Jr.; Step daughter, Shardi Hulbert; one Grandson, Rayuntez D. Gant Jr.; Sisters: Lynell Butler (twin), Tamika Butler and Delisa McGowan; Brothers: Kevin Butler(Robin), Douglas McGowan, Douglas U. McGowan(Christian), Darrayl McGowan, Nieces: Emani Holmes and Jaelynn Smith; Nephews: Sean Butler, Kevin Butler(Jeannelle), Keshone White, Michael Johnson, Justin & Joshua Smith. and her beloved Great Nephews: Dior Richardson and Majoar Johnson; God Children: Myeshia Francis, Kiamante Bankston, Joseph Hickman, Isadore Burton, Kyron Hagans, Kamren Clark and Terran Hurel; One Great Aunt, Olga Lee Bankston; Devoted cousin Janel Bankston; Godmother, Lillian J. Henry and a host of devoted relatives and friends. Gaynell was preceded in death by her Father, Douglas McGowan Sr., brother, Donald McGowan and Father-in-Law, Alex Hulbert, Sr. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the Fifth African Baptist Church 3419 South Robertson Street. New Orleans, Louisiana 70115 beginning 10 am. Pastor Dale Jay Sanders Sr., Officiant. Church visitation 9 am until service time. Burial will be at Providence Park.
