Carolyn Byrd Rainey, a retired employee of Southern University of New Orleans, departed this life on Monday, May 25, 2026 at the age of 82. She has joined her husband, Louis “June” Rainey, of 42 years in heaven. A native of New Orleans with Hahnville roots, Carolyn is a graduate of L.B. Landry High School and a 1972 graduate of Southern University of New Orleans. She loved her Alma Mater, having served in multiple roles and positions, and retiring as The Purchasing Director. She supported the Southern University System and was a longtime season ticket holder, traveling, supporting the teams, and displaying her school spirit. Known for her sense of style, love for family, education, and excellence, her presence will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Jones and Clayton Byrd; and her husband, Louis “June” Rainey. She leaves to carry on her memory, daughter Cherlyn Luna and son, Louis (Tracee) Rainey; sister Carmen King; Grandchildren Dr. Dwight (Brittany) Brown, Candice Brown, Louis Rainey, IV, Logann Rainey, and Larcque McKay; special niece Tracie King; her Page family siblings Gwen Page (Melvin) King, Nelson Page, Sidney Page; best friend Glenda Marzett, and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and close friends. Pastors, officers and members of St. James Methodist Church of Louisiana, Concord Church, Franklin Avenue Baptist Church and Bethany United Methodist Church, officers and members of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc, employees of SUNO, Southern University Baton Rouge and Baptist Hospital, officers and members of Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, and other friends are invited to share in the celebration of her life on Saturday, June 6, 2026, 10:00 am at St. James Methodist Church of Louisiana, 1925 Ursulines Avenue, New Orleans, La. Viewing will be from 8:00am-10:00am. Interment will be at McDonough Cemetery, Gretna, La. Professional Services Entrusted to: Littlejohn Funeral Home, 2163 Aubry Street, Cal K.
